Smashing mosaics
There is nothing more free and exhilarating than wielding a hammer and smashing some plates and tiles to make mosaics. It alleviates stress and tension and expends some energy. Reducing discarded rubbish going to landfill it puts to use your innovative juices to create unique artwork for your home and garden!
The process of making mosaics.
The process is slow, which means after your initial frenzy of smashing things you gain patience. You learn to enjoy the Zen like state of meditation as you place each piece in its rightful home. Of course, being the mad goddess that I am, the frenzied state has been known to continue for a substantial part of the project!
I particularly like the style called Picassiette, also known as Trencadis. This is where broken tiles and chinaware, glass, beads, buttons, shells, anything really, are assembled and adhered to a substrate to create decorative art and sculptures. Or, as an interior or exterior decoration.
Freedom is the key word here and for me, there are very few rules!
Here is a little taster of just a few of my mosaics but if you would like to see more please follow me on Instagram and Pinterest
Sculptural mosaics
Sculptural mosaics is what I love the most. Being able to create something big and in 3 dimensions is far more rewarding and exciting.
As part of our garden makeover and landscaping we are incorporating and building walls, lounge-suites and garden furniture made out of rammed straw or straw bales. After rendering these then provide a blank canvas that can be covered in mosaic!
It's all about getting the structure right to take the weight of all the tiles, adhesive and grout. Eventually, we hope our garden is a bright playground filled with loads of fun sculptures and monuments.
